In the summer of 2005,
KU graduate student
Raul Diaz and I
traveled to the highlands of Chiapas, Mexico to do some general
collecting. Most of the original vegetation in this area had regrown after being cut down in the last few decades, but we still
managed to find a decent diversity of herps. From a cultural
standpoint, this area of Mexico is interesting because outside of
the major cities, the ancient Mayan language of Tzotzil is spoken by
many people, including our guide pictured with me to the left.
